Speeding-Up Any-Angle Path-Planning on Grids

چکیده
Simple Subgoal Graphs are constructed from grids by placing subgoals at the corners of obstacles and connecting them. They are analogous to visibility graphs for continuous terrain but have fewer edges and can be used to quickly find shortest paths on grids. The vertices of a Simple Subgoal Graph can be partitioned into different levels to create N-Level Subgoal Graphs, which can be used to find shortest paths on grids even more quickly by ignoring subgoals that are not relevant for the search, which significantly reduces the size of the graph being searched. Search using Two-Level Subgoal Graphs was a non-dominated entry in the Grid-Based Path Planning Competitions 2012 and 2013. In this paper, we take advantage of the similarities between Subgoal Graphs and visibility graphs to show that Subgoal Graphs can be used, with small modifications, to quickly find “any-angle” paths, thus extending their applicability. Any-angle paths are usually shorter and more realistic looking than grid paths since the movement along any-angle paths is not constrained to grid edges. Our algorithm has the advantage that it is a simple extension of searching Subgoal Graphs and is up to two orders of magnitude faster than Theta* and up to an order of magnitude faster than Block A* (using 5 × 5 blocks), two of the most well-known any-angle pathplanning algorithms, while still finding any-angle paths of comparable lengths.

Incremental Phi*: Incremental Any-Angle Path Planning on Grids
We study path planning on grids with blocked and unblocked cells. Any-angle path-planning algorithms find short paths fast because they propagate information along grid edges without constraining the resulting paths to grid edges. Incremental pathplanning algorithms solve a series of similar pathplanning problems faster than repeated single-shot searches because they reuse information from the ...
متن کاملLazy Theta*: Any-Angle Path Planning and Path Length Analysis in 3D
Grids with blocked and unblocked cells are often used to represent continuous 2D and 3D environments in robotics and video games. The shortest paths formed by the edges of 8neighbor 2D grids can be up to ≈ 8% longer than the shortest paths in the continuous environment. Theta* typically finds much shorter paths than that by propagating information along graph edges (to achieve short runtimes) w...

Square grids are commonly used in robotics and game development as spatial models and well known in AI community heuristic search algorithms (such as A*, JPS, Theta* etc.) are widely used for path planning on grids. A lot of research is concentrated on finding the shortest (in geometrical sense) paths while in many applications finding smooth paths (rather than the shortest ones but containing ...
متن کاملTrajectory Planning on Grids: Considering Speed Limit Constraints
Trajectory (path) planning is a well known and thoroughly studied field of automated planning. It is usually used in computer games, robotics or autonomous agent simulations. Grids are often used for regular discretization of continuous space. Many methods exist for trajectory (path) planning on grids, we address the well known A* algorithm and the state-of-the-art Theta* algorithm. Theta* algo...
متن کاملTheta*: Any-Angle Path Planning on Grids
Grids with blocked and unblocked cells are often used to represent terrain in computer games and robotics. However, paths formed by grid edges can be sub-optimal and unrealistic looking, since the possible headings are artificially constrained. We present Theta*, a variant of A*, that propagates information along grid edges without constraining the paths to grid edges. Theta* is simple, fast an...
